Moss Art & Creative Installations

Creative Plant-Themed Installations in Dubuque, Iowa

You love the look of plants. The lush greens, the organic textures, the way living walls and botanical displays make a space feel alive and interesting. But maybe you don't love the upkeep. Or maybe you've got a spot with zero natural light where nothing will grow. Or maybe—and we say this with love—you've killed enough plants to know that living greenery and your lifestyle just don't mix.

What if you could have all the beauty with none of the responsibility?

Planted. offers preserved moss art installations that capture the vibrancy and aesthetic of plants without the ongoing upkeep or lighting requirements. These are stunning, custom art pieces made from real preserved mosses that bring nature into your space permanently—no watering, no sunlight, no maintenance. Ever.

Hoping to stand out from the crowd? We got you.

What Is Preserved Moss Art?

Preserved moss art is exactly what it sounds like—artwork created from real moss that has been preserved through a special process that maintains its color and, texture indefinitely. Unlike living plants, preserved moss is no longer alive and doesn't require any care whatsoever.

We utilize three to five specimens of preserved, dried mosses to create a non-living art piece that looks remarkably natural and vibrant. The moss maintains its color for years, and brings organic texture and visual interest to any wall or space.

Think of it as nature, captured in its most beautiful moment and mounted on your wall. Like a slice of a forest floor.

These installations work in spaces where living plants simply can't survive—windowless offices, dark hallways, interior rooms with no natural light. An empty wall space that desperately needs a conversation piece. They're also perfect for anyone who wants the calming, biophilic benefits of greenery without adding another living thing to their care responsibilities.

No watering schedules. No fertilizing. No worrying about whether you remembered to water before your vacation. Just beautiful, permanent green.

Our Design Styles

Every moss art installation we create is custom, but our work generally falls into two aesthetic categories. We'll help you decide which direction feels right for your space and personality.

Natural Forest Floor Aesthetic

This style mimics the organic beauty of a woodland floor. We can incorporate driftwood, artificial ferns and plants, fungi, and other forest floor natural objects alongside the mosses to create pieces that feel like you've captured a slice of nature and hung it on your wall. You decide how forest-y you wish to go, the combinations are boundless!

The forest floor aesthetic works beautifully in spaces where you want warmth and organic texture—living rooms, bedrooms, spa-like bathrooms, wellness studios, restaurants with farm-to-table vibes. It's earthy, grounding, and deeply calming.

Modern Vibrant Aesthetic

Prefer something more contemporary? Our modern installations utilize vibrant mosses with bold colors and clean, intentional movements. These pieces feel more like art-forward design statements than nature reproductions.

The modern aesthetic is perfect for sleek office spaces, retail environments, modern homes, and anywhere you want greenery that feels fresh and current rather than rustic. We can work with accent colors, flow, and designs that complement contemporary interiors.

Of course, we can also blend these approaches or create something entirely unique. The beauty of custom work is that we're not limited to categories.

Our Creative Process

Each installation is a reflection of your personality. That's not just marketing speak—we genuinely believe that custom art should feel like an extension of you and your space. That's why our process starts with getting to know both.

Step One: Consultation

We meet with you in your space to determine scale, layout, color theme, and overall desired aesthetics and goals. This isn't a quick phone call—we want to see the wall where the piece will hang, understand the lighting and surrounding decor, and talk with you about what you're drawn to.

We'll ask questions: What feeling do you want this piece to evoke? Are there colors you want to incorporate or avoid? Do you prefer organic and natural or clean and modern? How bold do you want the piece to be?

Step Two: Design

Based on our consultation, we'll develop a concept for your installation. For larger or more complex pieces, we may provide sketches or mockups so you can visualize the finished product before we begin.

Step Three: Creation

This is where the magic happens. We carefully select and arrange mosses and other elements to bring your vision to life. Each piece is handcrafted with attention to texture, color variation, and visual movement.

Step Four: Installation

We deliver and install your finished piece, making sure it's perfectly placed and securely mounted. Then we step back and watch your face light up—that's our favorite part.

Where Moss Art Works Beautifully

One of the best things about preserved moss installations is their versatility. Because they don't need light or water, they can go virtually anywhere. Here are some of the spaces where our Dubuque clients have installed moss art:

Homes

Living rooms, bedrooms, home offices, bathrooms, hallways, entryways, basements—basically anywhere you want to add organic texture and visual interest. Moss art makes a stunning focal point above a fireplace, headboard, or sofa.

Offices and Workspaces

Reception areas, conference rooms, private offices, collaborative spaces. Moss art elevates professional environments and makes a memorable impression on clients and visitors. Plus, biophilic design has been shown to reduce stress and increase productivity—even when the plants aren't technically alive.

Retail and Hospitality

Restaurants, cafes, boutiques, salons, spas, hotels. A moss installation creates Instagram-worthy moments and sets your space apart from the competition. We've worked with Dubuque businesses looking to add that extra something that makes customers remember them.

Healthcare and Wellness

Waiting rooms, therapy offices, yoga studios, wellness centers. The calming presence of greenery supports healing and relaxation, and moss art delivers that presence without any allergens or maintenance concerns.

Event Spaces

Looking for a permanent backdrop for photos and gatherings? Moss walls create stunning visual anchors for event venues, wedding spaces, and community gathering places.

Benefits of Preserved Moss Art

Still not sure if moss art is right for you? Let us make the case:

Zero Maintenance

We cannot stress this enough. Preserved moss requires no watering, no feeding, no pruning, no attention whatsoever. Install it and forget about it—it will look beautiful for years without any effort on your part.

No Light Requirements

Living plants need light. Preserved moss doesn't care. Install it in a windowless basement, a dark hallway, an interior bathroom with no natural light. In fact, the colors are best preserved with less natural light! A win-win.

Long-Lasting Beauty

Properly preserved moss maintains its color and texture for years. While nothing lasts forever, you can expect your installation to look vibrant and beautiful for a very long time with zero intervention.

Biophilic Benefits

Humans are hardwired to respond positively to natural elements. Studies show that even representations of nature—photographs, preserved plants, nature sounds—can reduce stress and improve mood. Moss art brings those benefits into spaces where living plants aren't practical.

Unique and Custom

Every piece we create is one of a kind, designed specifically for your space and preferences. You won't find your installation in a catalog or hanging in your neighbor's house.

Conversation Starter

People are fascinated by preserved moss art. Expect guests, clients, and visitors to comment and, ask questions.

From Our Perspective

We started offering moss installations because we kept meeting people who loved the idea of plants but couldn't make living greenery work for their lifestyle or space. Maybe they traveled too much, or their home was too dark, or they'd tried and failed enough times that the whole thing felt discouraging.

Preserved moss art is a different way to bring nature into your life. It's not a consolation prize for people who can't keep plants alive—it's a legitimate art form with its own beauty and benefits. Some of our most plant-obsessed clients have moss installations right alongside their thriving collections, because the aesthetic is that good.

We also love the creative challenge of these projects. Each installation is a puzzle: How do we fill this specific wall in a way that feels balanced and beautiful? What combination of moss varieties will create the right depth and movement? How do we translate someone's vague sense of "I want it to feel organic but modern" into an actual physical piece?

There's real artistry in this work, and we take it seriously. Your installation isn't just preserved moss glued to a board—it's a carefully considered composition designed to enhance your space.

Sizing and Pricing

Moss art installations can range from small accent pieces to full wall-to-wall statements. We create pieces as intimate as a framed artwork for a bathroom or as dramatic as a twelve-foot feature wall for a commercial lobby.

Pricing varies based on the size of the installation, the complexity of the design, the moss varieties and additional elements incorporated, and whether installation requires special accommodations.

Because every piece is custom, we don't publish standard pricing. The best way to get a quote is to reach out and tell us about your project. We'll discuss your vision, assess your space (either in person or via photos), and provide a quote based on what you're looking for.

We're happy to work within budgets and can often suggest ways to achieve a beautiful result at different price points. A smaller, simpler piece might be perfect for dipping your toe into moss art, while a larger investment creates a true statement installation.

Connect With Our Other Services

Moss art is just one way we help Dubuque residents and businesses bring nature into their spaces. If you're also interested in living plants, we'd love to help with that too.

Our plant consultations help you choose the right living plants for spaces that can support them. Our potting bar and repotting services keep your plants healthy and thriving. Our ongoing plant care services handle the maintenance so you can enjoy plants without the work. And when something goes wrong, our plant doctor diagnostics service helps you troubleshoot.

For many clients, the ideal setup is a combination: preserved moss in the spots where living plants won't work, and actual living specimens in the spaces where they'll thrive. We can help you figure out what goes where.
